A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for parts of Northeast Florida, including Suwannee County, Northern Florida and Southeast Georgia, by the National Weather Service, from 4 a.m., Wednesday until 5 p.m., Wednesday. There is also a Windchill Advisory, from 1 a.m., Wednesday until 9 a.m., Thursday; and a Freeze Warning from 3 a.m., Wednesday until 9 a.m., Thursday.

Overnight heavy mixed precipitation is in the forecast, including freezing rain. The NWS predicts freezing cold windchills, and power outages and tree damage due to ice, as well as the possibility of snow accumulations of up to 3 inches and ice up to 1/10 thick, which will make travel dangerous, especially during the Wednesday morning commute.

“The cold ground temperature causes the precipitation to freeze upon impact, thus creating ice and slick conditions, especially on elevated overpasses and bridges,” Suwannee County Emergency Management posted on its Facebook page. “Black ice is feasible. Sleet and the refreezing of snow or rain water can also generate black ice, particularly Wednesday night after sundown.”

Suwannee County Emergency Management urges travelers to stay off the roads for the duration of the winter storm. Please call 5 1 1 for traffic updates, if travel is necessary.
